2026 Cruise Booking Trends: What More Than 1,400 Bookings Reveal
Paramount Cruises booking data for the first half of this year reveals the departure ports, cruise lines, ships and cabin choices shaping cruise holidays in 2026 and beyond.
As we move beyond the halfway point of 2026, we have analysed more than 1,400 Paramount Cruises bookings covering over 3,000 cruise guests who have booked their cruise holiday during the first 6 months of the year. The results reveal a varied cruise market in which Southampton remains the leading departure port, international cruise-and-stay holidays attract significant demand, balcony cabins are the clear favourite and customers are already securing holidays well into 2027 and 2028.
This data reflects the booking behaviour of Paramount Cruises customers and the holidays available through us, rather than the wider UK cruise market as a whole. Nevertheless, it provides a valuable insight into the ships, destinations and experiences people are actively choosing.
Southampton leads, but most cruises begin overseas
Cruises from Southampton lead our 2026 booking data, accounting for 19.84% of orders. This confirms the continuing appeal of no-fly cruising, with guests able to avoid airports, travel with greater freedom over their luggage and begin their holiday from the UK.
However, the wider picture is much more international. More than four in every five bookings depart from somewhere other than Southampton, with Barcelona accounting for 12.56%, New Orleans 11.42% and Miami 8.99%. Together, these three overseas cities represent 32.97% of all bookings, while the four leading departure ports account for 52.81%.

The results show strong demand for both convenient UK departures and more immersive fly-cruise experiences. International sailings are particularly appealing when they are combined with hotel stays, rail journeys, escorted tours or major events, allowing guests to experience much more than the cruise alone.
Our cruise and stay holidays are designed around this demand, bringing together carefully selected sailings with flights, hotels, transfers and memorable experiences. Rather than simply reaching the ship, the journey to and from the cruise becomes an important part of the holiday.
Why New Orleans is such a standout result
Perhaps the most distinctive finding is the performance of New Orleans, which accounts for 11.42% of bookings and is our third most popular departure port. This result also reflects one of Paramount Cruises’ most established specialist areas: holidays combining New Orleans with the music, culture and history of America’s Deep South.
Rather than treating the city simply as somewhere to board a ship, we build complete itineraries around the destination. Our Mardi Gras cruise holidays allow guests to experience New Orleans during its most spectacular annual celebration before setting sail on a Caribbean cruise. For those who want to explore more of the region, our Ultimate Music Cities holidays combine Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans with a Caribbean sailing. These carefully planned journeys bring together legendary music venues, historic studios, distinctive local culture and several of America’s most exciting cities.

Our specialist Mardi Gras and Music Cities programmes therefore play a significant role in New Orleans’ strong position within the data. Rather than weakening the finding, this helps demonstrate how distinctive products and first-hand destination knowledge can inspire demand for a cruise port that might otherwise be overlooked. It also reflects a wider move towards experience-led cruise holidays. For many guests, the hotel stays, cultural experiences and overland journey are now just as important as the days spent onboard.
Barcelona remains our leading overseas cruise port
At 12.56% of bookings, cruises from Barcelona represent our largest share of international departures. The city combines regular flights from the UK, one of Europe’s most important cruise ports and enough attractions to justify extending the holiday before setting sail.
Guests can visit the Sagrada Família, explore the Gothic Quarter, enjoy tapas in El Born or spend time beside the Mediterranean in Barceloneta. A two or three-night hotel stay turns a traditional Mediterranean cruise into a more complete city-and-sea experience, while also providing a more relaxed start to the holiday. Barcelona is served by a wide range of cruise lines and offers itineraries throughout the Western Mediterranean and beyond. This combination of accessibility, choice and pre-cruise experiences helps explain its consistently strong performance.
Miami continues to be a major Caribbean gateway
Miami cruise holidays account for 8.99% of bookings, making the city our fourth most popular departure port. Miami provides access to a huge choice of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries, but its appeal extends far beyond the cruise terminal.
Many guests spend several nights exploring South Beach, Little Havana and Wynwood before joining their ship. The city can also be combined with Fort Lauderdale, the Florida Keys, Orlando or major sporting events such as the Miami Grand Prix, creating numerous opportunities to build a wider holiday around the sailing.
Other notable international departure points include Vancouver at 4.50%, Civitavecchia for Rome at 4.28% and Tokyo or Yokohama at 3.71%. These destinations further demonstrate the importance of combining a cruise with an iconic city, scenic rail journey or extended land itinerary. Vancouver is particularly well suited to this type of holiday. As a gateway to Alaska, it can be combined with the Canadian Rockies, Whistler, Vancouver Island or a Rocky Mountaineer rail journey, bringing together mountain landscapes, coastal scenery, wildlife and glaciers within one memorable trip.
MSC Cruises leads a varied cruise line market
MSC Cruises is the most frequently booked cruise line within our year-to-date data, followed by Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages. Celebrity Cruises and P&O Cruises complete the five leading brands, with Princess Cruises, Azamara, Royal Caribbean, Holland America Line and Cunard also featuring prominently.
The variety within this group is as revealing as the ranking itself. MSC Cruises offers modern ships, extensive family facilities and strong value across Europe, the Caribbean and other worldwide destinations. Norwegian Cruise Line is known for its flexible approach to dining, entertainment and onboard life, while Virgin Voyages delivers a distinctly different adults-only experience.
There is no single type of cruise dominating demand. Guests are selecting the cruise line that best matches the holiday they want, whether that means family-friendly facilities, an adults-only atmosphere, a convenient UK departure or a destination-focused voyage. Greater choice is positive for cruise customers, but it also makes specialist advice increasingly important. Two similar-looking itineraries can offer very different experiences depending on the cruise line, ship, cabin and fare selected.
No individual cruise ship dominates demand
Norwegian Breakaway is the most frequently booked ship in our data, accounting for 6.14% of orders. It is followed by MSC Virtuosa at 5.42%, Norwegian Getaway at 5.21%, Valiant Lady at 4.71%, Azamara Onward at 3.64%, Iona at 3.64% and Scarlet Lady at 3.43%.
Brilliant Lady, Celebrity Solstice, MSC World Europa, Resilient Lady and MSC Meraviglia also appear among the leading ships. However, even the most frequently booked vessel represents only just over 6% of orders, showing that demand is spread across a wide selection of ships and cruise experiences.
This suggests that itinerary, departure port, package inclusions and overall value can be just as influential as the name of the ship. It also demonstrates the diversity of the market, with customers choosing everything from large resort-style ships to smaller vessels offering more destination-focused itineraries. Norwegian Breakaway’s leading position is also connected to the strength of New Orleans within the data. Its inclusion in specialist Mardi Gras and Music Cities holidays shows how the land itinerary and cruise product can work together to influence the booking decision.
Balcony cabins remain the preferred choice
Balcony cabins are the most popular accommodation category within our sales overview, leading inside, outside and suite bookings by a clear margin. A balcony offers the combination many guests are looking for: natural light, additional private space and somewhere to enjoy the scenery without committing to the higher cost of a suite.
The appeal can be particularly strong on scenic itineraries. A private balcony can add considerably to a voyage through Alaska, the Norwegian fjords or other destinations where the views are an important part of the experience.
Inside cabins continue to account for a significant part of the market, particularly among guests who prioritise itinerary, onboard entertainment or overall price over the amount of time spent in their accommodation. The results suggest that customers are prepared to invest in their cabin, but value remains central to the decision.

Guests are planning well ahead
Although the orders included in this analysis were placed during 2026, they are not limited to cruises departing this year. The data includes holidays sailing throughout 2027 and into 2028, showing that many guests are comfortable securing the right itinerary well in advance.
Cruises remain a forward-planned purchase, particularly when customers want a specific cabin, sailing date or flight option. Booking early can also be important for school holidays, milestone celebrations and itineraries with limited availability.
Planning ahead becomes even more important for complex cruise-and-stay packages. International flights, hotel rooms, rail journeys, escorted experiences and event tickets all have their own capacity restrictions, meaning availability outside the ship can be just as important as the cabins onboard.
For specialist holidays such as Mardi Gras, Music Cities or Alaska and the Canadian Rockies, booking early can provide a greater choice of accommodation, flights and included experiences.
Customers are choosing complete holidays, not just cruises
The popularity of Barcelona, New Orleans, Miami, Vancouver and Tokyo suggests that many customers are considering the full journey rather than simply selecting a ship. A hotel stay before the cruise provides time to explore another destination and creates a more relaxed beginning to the holiday, while a post-cruise extension allows guests to continue their trip without arranging another long-haul journey later.
More ambitious itineraries can combine the cruise with rail travel, escorted tours, iconic music destinations, wildlife experiences or major sporting events. These additions can transform a seven-night sailing into a two or three-week journey while giving guests access to an itinerary that would be more complicated to organise independently.
The strongest theme within our 2026 booking data is therefore variety. Southampton remains our leading departure port, but international fly-cruise holidays represent the majority of bookings. MSC Cruises tops the cruise line rankings, yet demand is distributed across numerous brands, while Norwegian Breakaway leads a diverse selection of ships without dominating the market.
New Orleans is perhaps the most revealing result. Its performance reflects Paramount Cruises’ specialism in Mardi Gras and Music Cities holidays, but it also demonstrates the potential of experience-led cruise packages. Customers are not always choosing a ship first and then deciding what to do around it. In many cases, the destination, event or land journey provides the initial inspiration, with the cruise completing the experience.
As we look towards the remainder of 2026 and into 2027, we expect the most compelling cruise holidays to be those that bring these elements together clearly, creating memorable journeys that offer much more than the sailing alone.
Methodology: This article is based on Paramount Cruises orders placed from the beginning of 2026 to the end of June. It covers more than 1,400 bookings and over 3,000 cruise guests. The findings reflect Paramount Cruises customers, the products available through us and areas in which we have developed specialist holidays. New Orleans, in particular, is influenced by our established Mardi Gras and Ultimate Music Cities programmes. The results should therefore be viewed as an insight into our customers’ booking behaviour rather than the wider UK cruise market as a whole.
