Cognitive Neuroscience & Somatically trained Therapist, Morgan Starr-Riestis, Reveals How Westernized 1:1 Therapy Approaches Fall Short, And How to Fix Them

After many years in the mental health field, Morgan Starr-Riestis calls out 4 major shortcomings of 1:1 therapy from her perspective as a therapist and how to fix them.

In this article, therapist Morgan Starr-Riestis explains how Westernized 1:1 therapy “definitely has its benefits but, also has shortcomings” and offers a science-backed solution that you can apply today so that you can finally start living your happiest, most fulfilled life.

Morgan got her bachelors degree in Cognitive Neuroscience, Wellness, and Human Biology and her masters degree in Clinical Mental Health with an emphasis in Somatic therapies. She has worked with thousands of clients within her years of experience in Horticulture therapy, Wilderness therapy, Eating Disorder residential treatment, and private practice settings. Morgan has also started to gain quite a following on social media such as on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook where she has over 135k followers.

Shortcomings of One-On-One Therapy

1. 1:1 therapy limits you to the perspective of one other person.

Morgan shared, “humans are social creatures, which is why the therapeutic relationship is so critical and is actually one of the most important factors within the therapeutic process.” But Morgan points out how within this dynamic you’re only working with one other person and their perspective, which can be quite limiting.

“We need to get communities involved with healing, because people don’t change and grow outside of the therapy office without it.”

She mentions that community “not only offers us support when things are hard, it also offers us accountability toward our goals.”

2. Most therapy consists of a one-hour session, once a week.

Morgan has seen over and over that clients have a difficult time really seeing the transformation they’re looking for within this short period of time. She claims, “it takes a lot of repetitions to make true change in our lives and oftentimes, one hour once a week just isn’t enough which can leave people frustrated.”

She continues, “this short amount of time also leaves therapists in a sticky place to help because people are complex and it’s almost impossible to really see the client’s full holistic picture the framework of one hour, once a week.”

3. Most 1:1 Westernized therapy isn’t holistic, which doesn’t account for our complexity.

Morgan shared, “it’s starting to become more obvious to the Westernized therapeutic world that we aren’t just brains sitting up in our heads. We’re also an entire nervous system, and body as well, which oftentimes doesn’t get addressed in therapy since so much of the time is spent just talking to our minds.”

Morgan argues that if someone really wants to heal, they need to broaden their frameworks to account for the complex ways they store trauma in their nervous systems and bodies.

4. Clients often believe that the therapist has all the answers they need.

In a Westernized world, many people like going to a professional and having the answers given to them. Morgan shares that while there may be times where therapists give advice and reflections, the paradigm where a person gets all of their answers from a therapist can contribute to “leading a client away from their own internal wisdom and not to mention the potential of unhealthy power dynamics.” Instead, Morgan suggests that clients need to be led to their own internal wisdom.

How to Fill the Gaps Traditional Therapy Leaves Behind

After years of seeing clients’ healing stunted by the limitations listed above, Morgan decided to create an online course that offers solutions to these shortcomings of modern therapy. She has spent over seven years now perfecting this step-by-step process to help people take back the reins of their life, healing, and relationships.

Within this popular science-backed course, people from around the world are offered lifetime access to the tools they need to fast-track their growth emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and physically. This course includes customized curriculum, daily nervous system regulating techniques, journal prompts, meditations and much more that helps transform people’s lives within a “private community of people doing the work alongside you.”

Those who have already taken this course report feeling “less anxious on a daily basis”, “more confidence” in their relationships, and “more fulfillment” in life and their careers.  Morgan also offers packages where clients can work with her 1:1, and within a weekly group call as well. The course is available on her website, but she warns that spots are filling up fast.
